From Morgantown to Lewisburg: The State Department's Impact on West Virginia

On behalf of the American people, the State Department promotes and demonstrates democratic values and advances a free, peaceful, and prosperous world. By leading America’s foreign policy through diplomacy, advocacy, and assistance, the Department keeps the American people safe both at home and abroad and advances our shared economic prosperity. The State Department directly impacts the “Mountain State” of West Virginia through job creation, adoption support, and academic exchange programs.

First, the State Department, in partnership with agencies across the federal government, creates jobs for West Virginian workers by opening markets and eliminating trade barriers overseas, as well as by attracting foreign direct investment to the United States. In 2018, West Virginia exported $8.1 billion in goods, and as of 2016, West Virginia goods exports supported approximately 25,883 jobs. Foreign direct investment into West Virginia supported an additional 28,900 jobs in 2016.

Secondly, the State Department impacts West Virginia through the intercountry adoption process. In Fiscal Year 2017, the Bureau of Consular Affairs issued visas to 21 children who were adopted by U.S. citizens from West Virginia. Intercountry adoption is one of the Bureau of Consular Affairs’ highest priorities, and the bureau’s Office of Children’s Issues works diligently to establish and maintain intercountry adoption as a viable option for children in need of permanency throughout the world when it is in the best interest of the child and domestic solutions have been given due consideration.

Finally, the State Department positively impacts West Virginia through exciting exchange partnerships, including through the 100,000 Strong in the Americas Innovation Fund. The Innovation Fund is a public-private sector collaboration that supports new higher education partnerships between the United States and countries throughout the Americas. As part of this program, West Virginia University and Universidad Nacional de Asuncion in Paraguay are working together to promote student and faculty mobility in energy, water quality, waste management, environment, and economics. The program includes visits to prominent sites in the field for first-hand observations, and hands-on training in new and advanced technologies on their respective campuses. The Innovation Fund fuels new higher education partnerships, increases academic exchanges, provides critical access training programs, and builds bridges of opportunities.

From Morgantown to Lewisburg, the State Department benefits West Virginian communities through job creation, adoption support, and academic exchange programs that expand experiences and broaden perspectives for West Virginian students.
