The U.S.-Philippines Alliance: An Enduring Bond Based on Shared History and Common Interests

Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo traveled to Manila, Philippines February 28-March 1 to underscore the importance of the U.S.-Philippines alliance -- an enduring bond based on our shared history and common interest in a free and prosperous Indo-Pacific region, rooted in the values of democracy.

Secretary Pompeo traveled to the Philippines to reaffirm U.S. support for this critical treaty ally at a time when the country faces increasingly diverse threats to its security. In meetings with government leaders, the Secretary emphasized that the United States is committed to working together to promote regional peace and stability, advance mutual prosperity, and nurture ever-stronger people-to-people ties.

On February 28, the Secretary met with Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte. They reaffirmed the longstanding U.S.-Philippines alliance, discussing ways to improve cooperation on regional security and counterterrorism. The Secretary and President Duterte also exchanged views on ongoing efforts to achieve the denuclearization of North Korea.

In Manila, the Secretary met with Secretary of Foreign Affairs Teodoro Locsin, Jr. on March 1. In remarks at a press availability after their meeting, the Secretary underscored the importance of our longstanding alliance and discussed our cooperation on a number of global issues.

On March 1, Secretary Pompeo met with business leaders to underscore the importance of our business ties and spoke with Karmina Constantino of ABS-CBN and Buena Bernal of Channel News Asia to discuss his travel and the United States and the Philippines' cooperation on global issues.

The Secretary also took a moment to meet with the staff and families of the U.S. Embassy in the Philippines to thank them for their work.
