U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson delivered remarks at the U.S. Department of State outlining the Trump administration's decision to conduct a review of U.S. Iran policy across the entire government. Secretary Tillerson explained that a comprehensive Iran policy requires the United States address "all of the threats posed by Iran."
Secretary Tillerson said, “Iran is the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism and is responsible for intensifying multiple conflicts and undermining U.S. interests in countries such as Syria, Yemen, Iraq, and Lebanon, and continuing to support attacks against Israel.”
“Whether it be assassination attempts, support of weapons of mass destruction, deploying destabilizing militias, Iran spends its treasure and time disrupting peace,” Secretary Tillerson continued.
Secretary Tillerson warned, “An unchecked Iran has the potential to travel the same path as North Korea, and take the world along with it.”
In addition to the threat Iran poses internationally, Secretary Tillerson addressed abuses inside Iran’s own borders. He said, “Iran continues to have one of the world’s worst human rights records; political opponents are regularly jailed or executed, reaching the agonizing low point of executing juveniles and individuals whose punishment is not proportionate to their crime.” Secretary Tillerson also noted Iran's arbitrary detention of foreigners, including U.S. citizens, on false charges. According to Secretary Tillerson, several U.S. citizens remain missing or unjustly imprisoned in Iran.
Secretary Tillerson also discussed Iran’s nuclear program, stating, “Iran’s nuclear ambitions are a grave risk to international peace and security.” The Secretary explained, “With its latest test of a medium-range ballistic missile, Iran’s continued development and proliferation of missile technology is in defiance of UN Security Council Resolution 2231.”
Secretary Tillerson concluded, “The evidence is clear. Iran’s provocative actions threaten the United States, the region, and the world.”
Secretary Tillerson closed by reiterated the Trump administration’s commitment to conduct a comprehensive review of the U.S. Iran policy. He noted, “Once we have finalized our conclusions, we will meet the challenges Iran poses with clarity and conviction.”
