Conversations With America: Technology as a Tool in the Fight Against Human Trafficking

Luis CdeBaca, Ambassador At-Large, Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, will hold a conversation with Todd Park, U.S. Chief Technology Officer, The White House and Claire Schmidt, Director of Programs, THORN.  Trafficking in persons is a crime that undermines the most basic human rights and affects as many as 27 million persons around the world.  The discussion will explore new and innovative tools that governments, the private sector, and non-governmental organizations are developing to help identify victims and bring traffickers to justice.   The conversation will be moderated by Cheryl Benton, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs, and will be available for on demand viewing soon on YouTube and

I think sometimes tech for dev is hailed as a way to solve all the problems a developing nation faces, instead of just a crucial piece. Do you think programs like USAID-funded MTV Exit and others, which raise awareness of how young people can prevent themselves from being trafficked, or Ushahidi GBV mapping in Cambodia go far enough and engage the right audiences to make a difference long-term? What plans does State have to take tech further to prevent, protect, and prosecute?

Awareness can be increased through advertising but is anyone willing to take out a Superbowl ad - since that's the peak of human trafficking?

Excellent point about placing an ad during the Super Bowl! Priorities seemed to be misplaced in our nation and globally. The seriousness of human trafficking and the commercial sexual exploitation of children warrants more media attention both in programs and in advertisements. No matter what most people think media, especially advertisements are powerful tools that can be utilized in ways besides just selling commodities and status.
