Under Secretary McHale at Keraton in Indonesia

Today's "Photo of the Week" takes us to Indonesia, where Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Judith A. McHale is leading the U.S. observer delegation to the third annual meeting of the Bali Democracy Forum (BDF) on December 9-10, 2010 in Bali, Indonesia. In the photograph, Under Secretary McHale, left, is given a tour of the Keraton, the palace of the Yogyakarta Sultanate, by GBPH Prabukusumo, right, the brother of the Sultan of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, on December 4, 2010.

During her travel to Indonesia, Under Secretary McHale also helped open @america, the United States' first high-tech outreach center. Located at a popular shopping mall in Indonesia, @america has been designed to engage young Indonesians and their families and will use technology to bring together U.S. and Indonesian youth to learn about and cooperate on issues of importance to both our countries.

Every two months, @america's programming theme will change. The initial theme focuses on oceans and the marine environment. The Sant Ocean Hall from the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History provided interactive displays for @america, and the Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund and Conservation International provided graphics and information for the center.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and its Indonesian counterpart, BPPT, recently concluded a joint exploration of Indonesian waters. Scientists from our two countries are working to protect Indonesian waters, because Indonesia has the most diverse marine ecosystem in the world. The results of their work will be showcased at @america.
