About the Author: Andrew Stevenson serves as Chief of Staff to the U.S. Mission to the Organization of American States (OAS).

On June 24, Deputy U.S. Permanent Representative to the OAS Lew Amselem met with delegates from the African Commission on Human and People's Rights (ACHPR), who are in Washington, DC for consultative exchanges with the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights (IACHR) at OAS Headquarters.

The IACHR is holding a two-week long series of meetings and exchanges at the OAS Headquarters with the purpose of strengthening the OAS-AU cooperative relationship. This inter-regional dialogue includes opportunities to inform OAS Member States of ongoing cooperation between the two organizations in democracy and human rights.

Past contact between the ACHPR and the IACHR has resulted in a strong interest within both systems for a better understanding of the processes, working methodology, and the human rights standards developed in each region. This effort is occurring under the terms of the MOU signed by the two organizations in October 2009. A joint “Democracy and Human Rights Forum” is also being planned to take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in early 2011, and will address inter-regional human rights issues.

Humanrights issues can never be over-stressed, We needto keep pushing the world to recognize these problems and help them deal with the issue.
