President Obama said, “There must be a sustained effort to listen to each other; to learn from one another; and to seek common ground.” From March 29-31, Global Pulse 2010 will bring together socially-engaged individuals and organizations from around the world in an effort to listen, and learn, from one another. Sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), in collaboration with the U.S. Departments of State, Commerce, Education, and Health and Human Services, this three-day online collaboration event seeks to engage the international community.

The goal of the event is to connect participants who are champions for the same social issues to build new or strengthen existing relationships, as well as inform U.S. foreign assistance and diplomatic strategies based on major thematic areas and ideas that come to light during the event. Global Pulse 2010 will feature international leaders from government, private industry, and civil society organizations. The themes for Global Pulse 2010 feature 10 critical global challenges within the fields of science and technology, economic opportunity, and human development.

Dr. Rajiv Shah, Administrator of USAID, said, “To meet our collective challenges, we must take advantage of new technologies that allow us to engage in dialogue with individuals and communities from around the globe.” Watch Administrator Shah speak about what he hopes to get out of the conference here.

The U.S. government hopes motivated individuals will join this global conversation, and online ideas are turned into real action.

Registration is free, and participants can join from any computer with Internet access. Registration for Global Pulse 2010 opened March 1, 2010. To register for the event, please visit the official Global Pulse 2010 website.

I am so glad to see something like this happening. It is rare to hear about an event such as this that engages more than just the political leaders and more than just a few countries.

I only wish that this was advertised more and will last more than a couple days. Having this set up as an event makes it sound like it is a one time thing when in reality international communication like this needs to be constant.

Every time I read the venomous attacks on The White House Facebook page against President Obama and the current administration, as well as anyone remotely considered as 'liberal', I shudder at the thought that these people ("We’re Taking Back America!") might be involved in any secessionist machinations. Recent media labels of "seditionist" attached to the rages of the Beck-Palin duo, give me pause to think that American MSM is not only concerned, but also very watchful on the increasingly ubiquitous diatribes against "non-whites" in the U.S. The recent Arizona Spectacle (my term) says this 'shotgun' hatred is a very real thing, and seemingly spreading unchecked on the Internet and various social media sites.

I remembered meeting an Easterner this past year, quite obviously ‘hiding out’ in Canada, while conducting his 'business' from a university library. He would rant on about how there were clandestine plans afoot to annex British Columbia to the Northwest States (Washington and Oregon, specifically); how we "local yokels" would never see it coming! They were random, uninvited attacks that began unexpectedly one day, while I was quietly engaged in library research. I did my best to ignore him, but he kept blurting out inanities, continually saying he'd take me to coffee and let me "in on what's going on." I was to tell him what was going on with the policing in Vancouver, and gave me his e-mail address to let him know "if something should happen (!)" every time he (supposedly) flew back to New York to take care of business. After months of hearing his rantings, and despite distancing myself physically as much as I could, I finally had had enough of his attacks on Canadians, especially, and called him out, flat out telling him to leave me alone: "I'm not interested in anything you have to say. You're a crazy person!" I still see him occasionally, but do not acknowledge his presence; he seems to have gotten the message and leaves me alone now.

But after the personal attacks from commenters and posters on the White House Facebook pages over the past few weeks--my FB account was compromised, photos stolen, a ‘shadow’ account in my name set up, comments and posts on both the WH page and other Pages to which I subscribe on FB deleted almost immediately after they're entered--my antennae are now acutely honed to anything untoward emanating from these political "crazies".

Since sedition is a term I've never heard within the current American political rhetoric, I’ve been browsing the Web recently for edification. Today I discovered The Occidental Quarterly Online, a pseudo-journal for the “Whites” of America. Not unsurprisingly, the hatred against the Other is couched in an academic legitimacy attempt. A search on this site under "secession" came up with some very frightening articles, but one in particular stood out: "Secession is a Bad Idea for Whites" (September 3, 2009 accessed April 24, 2010; 1808h PST), because the same wording used by the author is what I've been seeing in posts and comments on the White House page. Not until the last few paragraphs is the true thesis revealed: a specific attack on Hispanics and Jews:

"It took just 30 years, from 1970 to 2000, for the Hispanic population of the United States to grow from an estimated 9.6 million to an estimated 35.3 million. This is an increase of more 856,666 Hispanics a year, a mark of how free, easy and safe their increase is (

Early America offered slim pickings for Jews, except in the slave trade. There were an estimated 1,243 to 3,000 in the United States in 1790. When Whites finished the difficult, dangerous work of settlement, the Jewish population suddenly leapt from 230,000 to 280,000 in 1880 to 1,508,000 to 2,349,754 in 1910. This was just three years before they took control of the United States banking system with their Federal Reserve system

None of these millions of newcomers paid their share of the cost of developing a high technological civilization in North America. None had built any roads, laid any railroad tracks, or built any bridges, dams or tall sky scrapers [sic].

We Whites have helped non-whites dispossess us by giving our habitat away for free, after developing it at such cost. If we keep doing this, we will be extinct.

We must stop helping non-whites dispossess us. We must stop running away. We must stop giving free habitat to those who seek to dispossess us. We must take back our land."

As Canadian neighbours, we can only commiserate with the American people as we observe the unfolding of their troubling times, all the while continuing vigilant that such hateful perspectives never find footholds in Canada.
