Woman Walks Among Debris in Port-au-Prince After Earthquake

Information on Earthquake in Haiti | Special BriefingAbout the Author: Major General (Ret) Scott Gration serves as the President's Special Envoy to Sudan.

I write today to express my deepest concern for the people of Haiti and my most heartfelt condolences to those who have lost a loved one in this terrible disaster. The earthquake in Haiti has wreaked horrible devastation, and we still do not know the extent of the destruction and loss of life. The people of Haiti are in our thoughts and prayers.

Haiti is half a world away from Sudan. The two countries may differ in culture, language, history, and situation; but the people of both countries deserve lives of peace and stability, with adequate healthcare and education, access to food and clean water, and basic human freedoms.

Also, we are following closely the developments regarding the missing members of the United Nations team and we extend our hope for their safety.

Sincerely, Scott.
