UN Flag Flutters Outside a Building in Germany

Interested in a career with the United Nations?  Curious about entry-level opportunities for young professionals?  The Bureau of International Organization Affairs is excited to announce U.S. participation in this year’s UN Young Professionals Program (YPP).  This may be just the opportunity you’ve been seeking to get your foot in the door with the United Nations.

To qualify, you need to be 32 years old or younger by the end of this year, hold at least a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, speak English and/or French fluently, and be a national of a participating country, such as the United States.

This year’s YPP exam is being offered in a variety of fields -- economic affairs, human rights, information systems and technology, photography, political affairs, and radio production.  The application period is staggered throughout the summer with deadlines in mid- to late August.  The exam will be held on December 4 in cities around the world, including New York City.

There are several steps to becoming a successful YPP participant and the first of those is applying to take the YPP written exam.  Upon successful completion of both the written and oral exams, candidates are then placed on a roster with other qualified candidates who can be selected for available positions within the UN.  Candidates are initially offered a two-year appointment which can then be reviewed for a continuing appointment with the UN.

A career as an international civil servant is the opportunity of a lifetime.  The UN’s 41,000 staff representing 193 Member States means that you will find yourself working alongside a diverse group of people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures.  Your work will be meaningful as the work of the United Nations touches every corner of the globe, focusing on a range of critical issues from sustainable development and environmental protection to disaster relief and counter-terrorism, and everything in between.

There are also many other opportunities for young professionals!  The Department of State encourages all qualified Americans to consider a variety of employment opportunities with the UN and other international organizations.  Many organizations offer internship programs to students and recent graduates and the U.S. sponsors Junior Professional Officers at several international organizations including the UN, UN Refugee Agency, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and more.  Additionally, qualified candidates are encouraged to apply for fixed-term professional positions or consider other employment possibilities including short-term contracts, opportunities with UN Volunteers, and more.

To learn more about the Young Professionals Program, including details about the application process, answers to FAQs, sample examinations, and additional resources, please visit the UN Careers website.

What about us older people that want to give something back to our countries, but yet still need a paycheck to exist on? I can do so many things that probably need to be done around an embassy or in a special program overseas? I am still very 'young' but with the wisdom and common sense and ability to act in a crisis that comes with age. This is my DREAM. Working in someplace like Djibouti would be a wonderful thing, Yet still a place where my family would not be worried about me. And, yes, and I'm used to your idea of roughing it. :)

In many of UN innovation, i always do not find the name of many west African countries such as Togo and others. Is that they are not part of the UN. Look upon this for there are many qualified people who can take place in such opportunities but are limited by the absence of their country. Regards

As an International Relations Major at the Uwi, Mona in Kingston, Jamaica. I find the United Nations to be a very powerful non-sate actor in international affairs as it has increased alot of its efforts towards creating sustainable, human and economic growth and development in several countries globally, especially developing countries like Jamaica. As a very ambitious young woman I would like to be apart of this organization.
