Secretary Kerry Addresses Reporters in Kyiv, Ukraine

Over the past week, President Obama, Secretary Kerry, Ambassador Power, and NATO have made statements condemning the invasion of Ukraine, calling for respect for Ukrainian sovereignty, and offering Russia alternatives to military aggression.  They have also responded to Russian claims that its actions in Ukraine are legal or legitimate.

President Obama said, "We call for Russia to withdraw its forces back to bases, refrain from interference elsewhere in Ukraine, and support international mediation to address any legitimate issues regarding the protection of minority rights or security."  “Together, the international community has condemned Russia’s violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine… we are prepared to work with anybody if their genuine interest is making sure that Ukraine is able to govern itself. President Obama spoke with leaders of France, Poland, the UK, Canada, and Germany. The entire G7 condemned the Russian Federation’s violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.  He also spoke directly with President Putin. Links to readouts of all these conversations are below.

Secretary Kerry said in Kyiv, “It was deeply moving to walk into a group of Ukrainians spontaneously gathered there and to listen to them, to listen to their pleas of passion for the right not to go back to life as it was under former president Yanukovych… brave Ukrainians took to the streets in order to stand peacefully against tyranny and to demand democracy…The Russian Government would have you believe...that there have been mass defections of Ukrainians to Russia, or that there have been mass attacks on churches in eastern Ukraine… ethnic Russians and Russian bases are threatened…that Kyiv is trying to destabilize Crimea... Not a single piece of credible evidence supports any one of these claims – none.”

U.S. Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power has said, "This intervention is without legal basis-indeed it violates Russia's commitment to protect the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence of Ukraine.  It is time for the Russian intervention in Ukraine to end…Our paramount concerns are to end the confrontation and to find a solution that allows the Ukrainian people to determine their own destiny, their own government, their own future…The United States will work with Ukraine, our allies and partners in Europe and around the world, and here at the United Nations to uphold and protect the sovereignty, unity and democratic future of Ukraine."  Read her statement at the UN Security Council below.

NATO also issued a statement saying, "Military action against Ukraine by forces of the Russian Federation is a breach of international law and contravenes the principles of the NATO-Russia Council and the Partnership for Peace…NATO Allies will continue to support Ukrainian sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and the right of the Ukrainian people to determine their own future, without outside interference…We intend to engage with Russia in the NATO-Russia Council."

You guys engineered a coup d'etat against a sovereign nation, and now you want to complain about the Russians. You installed a puppet government -- exactly the one Victoria Nuland spelled out in her infamous phone call -- and you expect the Russians to accept this? Please.
