First Lady Obama and Secretary Kerry With 2013 International Woman of Courage Award Recipient

Secretary of State John Kerry and First Lady Michelle Obama will honor a group of extraordinary women with the International Women of Courage Award on March 4, 2014. The award recognizes women around the world who have shown exceptional leadership in advocating for women's rights and empowerment, often at great personal risk.

Since 2007, the U.S. Secretary of State has recognized 66 women from 44 countries with this award, and the annual ceremony has become an occasion that inspires all of us who work at the U.S. Department of State. The powerful stories these women have to tell and the strides they have made is hard to describe until you have seen it for yourselves.

We want you to hear these women’s’ stories and spotlight their achievements so we are inviting you to the ceremony. If you follow the Department of State on social media and are an active user of TwitterFacebookGoogle+Tumblr, or Instagram, we want to join the event as part of #StateMeetUp!  Just fill out this form to apply by Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at 5:00 p.m. EST. Invitations are non-transferable, and we cannot accommodate guests of those selected.  For those selected to attend, the Department of State will contact you via email with additional instructions. If you are selected, you will be notified no later than Friday, February 28, 2014.

If you cannot come to the Department of State in Washington, D.C., to attend, we will be live-streaming the ceremony at www.state.gov and www.youtube.com/statevideo. You can also follow our coverage of the event on DipNoteTwitterFacebookGoogle+Tumblr, and Instagram, and join the conversation on women’s issues using the hashtags #IWOC and #IWD.

We hope you'll be able to join us, in person or virtually!

I am very much interested to attend and personally listen to and learn how women leaders have worked hard to fight this problem of rape as an instrument of war.
