From March 20 to 23, 2013, Secretary of State John Kerry accompanied President Barack Obama on his travel to Israel, the Palestinian Territories, and Jordan. On March 24, Secretary Kerry met with Iraqi leaders in Baghdad, Iraq. The goal of the Secretary's visit to Baghdad was to demonstrate the strong U.S. commitment to Iraq. During a press availability in Baghdad, Secretary Kerry said:

"I was very pleased to be able to have a chance to affirm to the Iraqi leaders that I met with that the United States continues to stand with the people of Iraq as they work to establish a democracy and a better future. And we are particularly grateful for the efforts of those people who remain so committed to political activity, to engaging in the constitutional process, and who are working for the rights that are guaranteed by the constitution.

"This past week, both of our countries marked the 10th anniversary of the beginning of the war here in Iraq, and we were, all of us, reminded of the remarkable sacrifices of so many Iraqis and also so many Americans who, together, gave their lives in a common fight to try to build the civil state that the people of Iraq have chosen for themselves."

It is difficult to know if the civil state of Iraq was chosen by Iraqi people by themselves. If they like it, they should give thanks and reverence to the U.S. government it to them almost handily.

I was disheartened when I saw Secretary Kerry on TV yesterday, bullying the government of Iraq. It seems like all US policy in Southwest Asia is now geared toward supporting Saudi Arabia in its drive to install fundamentalist regimes throughout the region.
