On August 10, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton traveled to Accra, Ghana, where she attended the Ghanaian State Funeral of the late President John Atta Mills. In a statement on the passing of President Mills, Secretary Clinton said, "President Mills made a significant contribution to Ghana's democracy and development, and forged a strong and positive partnership with the United States. As the third president of modern Ghana, he worked to strengthen his country's democratic institutions and to expand prosperity for all of its people. He promoted regional peace and reinforced Ghana's reputation as a leader in Africa. President Mills was a champion for his nation and his loss will be felt around the world."

While in Accra, Secretary Clinton also had the opportunity to meet with President Mahama at this residence. In a background briefing, a senior State Department official described Ghana as an important democratic and development partners in Africa. The official said, "Mills was a very important figure. We expect to have an equally strong relationship with his successor."

President Mills was recently in the United States to attend the G-8 meeting at Camp David, and five weeks before that he was in the United States on a state visit to meet with President Obama. It was in Ghana on July 11, 2009, where President Obama outlined his Administration's policy in Africa. The President's strategy makes clear that the United States will, in the spirit of partnership and mutual respect, stand with the people of Africa in support of their aspirations for a shared future of freedom and prosperity.
