At the end of a long trip through Asia with Secretary Clinton, I was lucky enough to have the chance to visit the USA Pavilion at the Yeosu Expo in the Republic of Korea. Fitting for its seaside location, the theme of the Expo (World's Fair) is "The Living Ocean and Coast." With dynamic multimedia displays and Korean-speaking U.S. Student Ambassadors, my visit to the USA Pavilion was a truly impressive experience.
The USA Pavilion is the result of a public-private partnership between the Department of State, corporate sponsors, and Earth Echo International, an ocean conservation non-profit organization. I was able to experience the visually stunning high-tech water screen featured in the USA Pavilion, and enjoyed the multi-media presentation about America's diverse coastal and ocean environments, and our efforts to protect this important natural resource. The USA Pavilion also includes video messages from President Obama and Secretary Clinton, demonstrating the importance of our participation in this global event. I am grateful to our corporate sponsors and non-profit partners; without their help, our participation would not have been possible.
I also had a chance to meet and interact with the real stars of the USA Pavilion, the Student Ambassadors. The 40 American university students, fluent in Korean, volunteered to come to Yeosu for the three-month Expo to greet guests, introduce the USA Pavilion, and build goodwill between the United States and the people of Korea. I was proud to hear that in their spare time, they were actively involved in their new community, helping clean local beaches and conducting exchanges with local students. Their time at the Expo builds on the close people-to-people ties between the United States and the Republic of Korea.
America's participation at the Yeosu Expo demonstrates our strong partnership with the Republic of Korea. Not only are our two countries allies and trading partners, but we are also partners on a wide range of global issues. This spirit of cooperation and friendship is showcased by the USA Pavilion, and it was a privilege to be one of the more than half a million visitors who toured the USA Pavilion.
