Following visits in Cairo and Alexandria, Egypt, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton traveled to Jerusalem on July 16, 2012. Secretary Clinton met with a range of Israeli officials, including Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, President Shimon Peres, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as Prime Minister Fayyad of the Palestinian National Authority.

Secretary Clinton and Prime Minister Fayyad of the Palestinian National Authority discussed a range of political and institutional-building issues related to the Palestinian Authority. Secretary Clinton met with President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian National Authority in Paris on July 6, 2012.

With Israeli officials, Secretary Clinton held in-depth discussions on a broad range of matters, including Egypt and Syria, comprehensive regional peace in the Middle East, Iran, and other regional and global issues. In remarks following her meeting with Israeli President Peres, Secretary Clinton said, "I am here in Jerusalem on such a beautiful day at a moment of great change and transformation in the region. It is a time of uncertainty but also of opportunity. It is a chance to advance our shared goal of security, stability, peace, and democracy, along with prosperity for the millions of people in this region who have yet to see a better future."

After meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, Secretary Clinton addressed reporters. She said, "Israel is a nation that shares a special bond with the United States. We are friends; we are allies."

She continued, "All my conversations today started from a simple premise: America's commitment to Israel is rock-solid; by strengthening Israel's security, we strengthen America's security. We are two democracies working together to ensure that our people can live without fear and with dignity and opportunity so that men and women, boys and girls, Israelis, Americans, Christians, Muslims, and Jews, people across the region, can fulfill their own God-given potential."
