Today, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton spoke with Chen Guangcheng. Following their conversation, the Secretary released the following statement:

"I am pleased that we were able to facilitate Chen Guangcheng's stay and departure from the U.S. Embassy in a way that reflected his choices and our values. I was glad to have the chance to speak with him today and to congratulate him on being reunited with his wife and children.

"Mr. Chen has a number of understandings with the Chinese government about his future, including the opportunity to pursue higher education in a safe environment. Making these commitments a reality is the next crucial task. The United States Government and the American people are committed to remaining engaged with Mr. Chen and his family in the days, weeks, and years ahead."Editor's Note: You can also read the Secretary's statement here.

US led (manipulated?) Chen to only decision he could make that allowed him to live with his family. Stay in Embassy & Chen's wife returns home to local thugs who just finished abusing her. If he asked 4 asylum only he leaves China and leaves his wife & kids to thugs. Forever split from family.

If stayed in China US told him China promised he would live as "normal citizen" free and to study law. Implication was US would somehow help make sure China would do this. No choice choice.

Chen gets out and his wife tells him his activist friends rounded up, arrested & she was tied to chair and threatened.

Naive stupid negotiators giving Chen no choice choice and getting him to say he is leaving of own volition.

China knows how to win these kinds of talks. It appears US had no idea of Chen's background story or just made incredible decision to trust China on this hero.

Something is wrong here. How could any person working in that embassy not convince Mr. Chen to stay in what was the only safe place for him to be?

It appears that the smoothness of the Secretary's trip overruled decency to a blind dissident in harm's way.

This doesn't reflect very well on the United States. You did not "faciilitate" anything but a future full of torment for that man and his family. Why? Just so Secretary Clinton would have an easy time of it?

@ Dan in Minnesota - if it were only true that it was "just one life" - Truth -- its many, many more. But lets be real many nations screw their own people - not just China.(chuckle)

If China wishes to be taken seriously as a world power – the ideas of a one blind man and his family should not be a threat. Perhaps China needs to rethink its position and policies if Ideas frighten them.

How are their people going to innovate, if they are afraid -not only to think but to speak? If Chinese policy is so weak as to be threatened by thought – their policy and long term success -is doomed.

Come on China get with the new program – at some point those people that are viewed as a threat to the state – will be the ones that will save your state – or revisit the China from 30 years ago? I doubt thats an option because if China falls backward – everything the Chinese Government fears will come to pass.Continue with the same policies of fearing thoughts and Ideas – China will hit a wall.

Change is knockn on the red dragons door – How the dragon handles change will determine -its success or failure. If China expects to bring prosperity to the other 800 million Chinese – its time to set their peoples voice and minds free. Perhaps the Americans can help you with that – if they haven't forgotten.

Perhaps this is an opportunity for China to walk through a new door? Take it.
