I am lucky to be among the officers from our Bureau of Economic, Energy and Business Affairs (EEB) who have just returned from the 2011 Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) Conference: Redefining Leadership, in San Francisco, CA. More than 1,000 public and private sector international executives met there to exchange information and ideas. As Department of State representatives, we sought to conduct outreach, publicize the new EEB Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) team, promote the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, and learn about new CSR trends and practices. All of this is aimed at helping the Department of State to advance a comprehensive approach to CSR, provide guidance, support and recognition for U.S. companies, and build partnerships with the business community, trade unions, associations, NGOs and civil society. Plenary sessions, breakouts and working luncheons included executives and practitioners from around the world. In attendance were several past winners and nominees of the Secretary of State's Aware for Corporate Excellence (ACE). On October 17, the State Department announced the 13 Finalists for ACE 2011. Winners will be announced by the Secretary of State this winter at the 13th annual ACE Ceremony and international broadcast. Stay tuned at www.state.gov/e/eeb/ace for more information!
