Muslim and Jewish Leaders Gather in New York

About the Authors: Farah Pandith serves as Special Representative to Muslim Communities, and Hannah Rosenthal serves as Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism.

Today, we're in Astana, Kazakhstan attending the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) conference on tolerance. This two-day conference is an important opportunity for groups across Europe to come together and find ways combat hatred and promote mutual respect. We used this conference to launch the ART Initiative, which stands for Acceptance, Respect, Tolerance. At the ART Initiative, several international NGOs from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Russia, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the United States presented successful and easily-adapted, innovative approaches to promoting mutual respect and combating intolerance and discrimination by involving interfaith, inter-ethnic youth and young adults.

We also gave speeches on combating discrimination and promoting mutual respect but with a slight twist. Hannah spoke about discrimination against Muslims while Farah spoke about anti-Semitism. The United States opposes intolerance and discrimination in all forms, so today we presented a Jewish envoy defending the rights of Muslims and a Muslim envoy standing up for Jews. This sent a powerful message on the importance of promoting mutual respect that says more than words alone can convey.
