As part of a ceremony held June 27, 2010, at Shahbaz Air Base to induct three U.S.-provided F-16 aircraft into the Pakistan Air Force fleet, U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan Anne W. Patterson donated medical equipment to the nearby Jacobabad District Headquarters Hospital. The Ambassador also signed a letter of intent with District Coordination Officer Dr. Kazim Jatoi to work in partnership to improve health services to the people of Jacobabad.

“The strength of our economies and our institutions and our people also are key elements of national power,” said Ambassador Patterson. “Today as we look at these outstanding examples of American military technology, we are also making another commitment to Pakistan, and specifically to the people in the Jacobabad District…”

The equipment, provided by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), included electronic fetal heart monitors, surgical tools, and an autoclave to sterilize surgical equipment. The donation also included reference tools and materials on proper procedures for patient safety and maternal and newborn health.

In addition to this donation, USAID has sponsored 57 polio eradication campaigns in Jacobabad since 2004. It also supports family planning and birth spacing through clinical training and outreach materials to public sector health officials, and safe drinking water and hygiene through training and provision of educational materials to school children and teachers.
