White House Blog: A New Beginning -- Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship

On April 26 and 27, the Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship is being held in Washington, DC. The purpose of the Presidential Summit is to highlight the importance of entrepreneurship to fostering economic opportunity and community development. The Presidential Summit seeks to deepen ties among business leaders, foundations and entrepreneurs in the United States and Muslim communities around the world, and represents President Obama's commitment made to Muslim communities in his June 2009 address in Cairo, Egypt.

Co-hosted by the Department of State and the Department of Commerce, the Presidential Summit is bringing together more than 275 participants from over 50 countries around the world. Participants include business leaders from diverse sectors, educators, community organizers, and social entrepreneurs.

President Obama is scheduled to give remarks today, and Secretary Clinton will deliver remarks at the closing session of the Presidential Summit on April 27. Speeches at the Presidential Summit will also be given by key government representatives, including Commerce Secretary Locke, Education Secretary Duncan, USAID Administrator Dr. Raj Shah, and leaders in the private sector, such as Yahoo! Co-founder Jerry Yang.

On April 28, Secretary Clinton and Ambassador Elizabeth Bagley, the Special Representative for Global Partnerships, will host a breakfast for women entrepreneurs attending the Presidential Summit at the Department of State. In April 2009, the Secretary established the Global Partnership Initiative, which is led by Ambassador Bagley. Through the Global Partnership Initiative, the Department of State is developing a vital component of smart power: strategic partnerships with private businesses, philanthropies, universities, faith communities, Diaspora groups, and individuals who today find themselves empowered like never before.
