On Tuesday, April 21, U.S. Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice announced the U.S. decision to review our position regarding the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples at the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. President Obama has promised greater engagement with federally recognized tribal governments, and improved communication with Native American tribes is a prominent theme in the Administration. President Obama also committed the United States to a new era of engagement in multilateral affairs, including engagement with significant international instruments and institutions and exploring their potential to advance rights protection. Tuesday's announcement represents a step forward on both fronts, and as you can see from the applause, was well received by the international community as well.
