In 1970, Earth Day was launched as a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment. Across the Western Hemisphere, U.S. embassies and our local partners celebrated Earth Day 2010 with a great line-up of activities that raised attention on ways to reduce our carbon footprint. In Asuncion, Paraguay, Earth Day is about strengthening local and international friendships and collaborative efforts toward greener communities. Ambassador Ayalde led a tree planting project at the Paraguayan-American Friendship Garden. In the Caribbean region, Earth Day is about engaging youth and enabling everyone to share their thoughts on our earth. Youth showcased a beautiful Earth Day poster during U.S. Embassy Jamaica's Earth Day celebration this year. U.S. embassies are also working with local indigenous groups and communities. In Guatemala, Ambassador McFarland attended a Mayan religious ceremony hosted by the Mayan Council of Elders. In Bogota, Ambassador Brownfield announced the launch of the environmental magazine Explorando El Planeta. In conjunction with USAID, U.S. Embassy Colombia also released a YouTube video featuring Colombia's spectacular Chingaza National Park. Our ambassadors in Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Uruguay made public statements to mark Earth Day 2010, and more U.S. embassy-led activities will continue to happen throughout the coming weeks to highlight how we can work together to improve our environment.

Hand-in-hand with local environmental organizations, community groups and indigenous communities, U.S. embassies throughout the western hemisphere are working actively to promote initiatives that help to preserve our environment and enable citizens to take up the responsibility of stewardship for our earth.
