On January 25, I accompanied Secretary Clinton to the Ministerial Preparatory Conference in Montreal where the international community made critical decisions to ensure the rapid and coordinated delivery of aid to the people of Haiti. Assistance from around the world has been key to making a difference in Haiti since the massive earthquake hit the capital city Port-au-Prince on Tuesday, January 12. Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive was with us in Montreal and provided details on the Haitian government's efforts to find food, shelter and medicine for survivors. Together with the Haitian government, the international community is working to establish a clear and common vision for the early recovery and longer-term reconstruction of Haiti.
This meeting, along with the donor meeting in Dominican Republic on January 18, are important preliminary steps in the preparation for a larger reconstruction conference on Haiti to take place in coming months.
We were joined at the conference by countries and international organizations already involved in the relief effort, as well as those who wish to be involved, including foreign ministers from the Group of Friends of Haiti, such as Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, France, Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay. The United States is a proud member of the Group of Friends of Haiti. We were also joined by representatives from Japan, Spain, the European Union, the Dominican Republic, the United Nations, the Organization of American States, and the Inter-American Development Bank. All spoke with one voice in support of long-term relief efforts for the Haitian people.
The international community is focused on the long-term need for sustainable growth and new opportunities for the Haitian people. Montreal offered a fitting location for this forward-looking meeting, as the city is home to one of the largest and most vibrant Haitian Diaspora communities in the world. As Secretary Clinton said: "Haiti will need not only the talent and grit of her people, including the Haitian Diaspora, but it will need all of us, partners and friends who are committed not just in the immediate aftermath of this terrible earthquake but for the duration.”
Stay tuned @WHAAsstSecty.
