On behalf of everyone at DipNote, we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. As we celebrate the holiday, our thoughts turn to those serving overseas. In his Thanksgiving Day Proclamation, President Obama said:

"As Americans, we hail from every part of the world. While we observe traditions from every culture, Thanksgiving Day is a unique national tradition we all share. Its spirit binds us together as one people, each of us thankful for our common blessings.

As we gather once again among loved ones, let us also reach out to our neighbors and fellow citizens in need of a helping hand. This is a time for us to renew our bonds with one another, and we can fulfill that commitment by serving our communities and our Nation throughout the year. In doing so, we pay tribute to our country’s men and women in uniform who set an example of service that inspires us all. Let us be guided by the legacy of those who have fought for the freedoms for which we give thanks, and be worthy heirs to the noble tradition of goodwill shown on this day."Full Text

Perhaps there is a mistake. This is a State Department website. Should the tribute be to the Foreign Service employees who set an example of service that inspires us all? We appreciate the men and women in uniform, but this is a State Department blog--where is the loyalty from headquarters?

The State Department is reposting the President's Thanksgiving Day message. It was not meant specifically for the State Department website. It would be nice if the President would mention all U.S. government employees overseas at this time -- "we pay tribute to our country's men and women in AND OUT OF uniform." Maybe next year!

In this citizen's humble opinion, whether you're in camo or a suit and tie, you're still in uniform as long as you have an official dress code to go by, identifying your service to this nation.

The tools you use may be different, but the dedication is not. Thus the tribute above includes you and your peers @ State.

Thanks for serving, hope you had a great thanksgiving!

Here in Germany we also celebrate Thanksgiving as a traditional date in the calendar. In Germany it is called "Erntedankfest" but the initial meaning is similar to Thanksgiving. I run a small website for UMTS Flatrates and I really enjoy reading the dipnote blog. Thank you for the great stories and the effort you put in here.

Greetings from Germany - Daniel
