Secretary Clinton Responds to Question at Department Town Hall

Yesterday, Secretary Clinton held a town hall meeting for State Department employees. She answered questions on a broad range of topics, including the Department’s use of new technologies.

Secretary Clinton said"On the security issue and on outreach and public diplomacy, we must figure out a way consistent with security to use these new tools. There is no doubt in my mind that we have barely scratched the surface as to what we can use to communicate with people around the world, and in fact, to use them [new technologies] as tools ...to further our own work and to be smart about it. … If people have ideas about how better to use these tools, please let me know because we’re going to work very hard – we have some people already looking at this – to see what more we can do to stay in touch with the world, which is our job, after all, to try to do that."

Wow, what a great town hall meeting. I hope we can see it on video soon. I also hope that SoS Hillary will do some town meetings (videoed & on this website/youtube) as she travels the world. I think it's a stupendous format for her and therefore for America, State, and our smart power diplomacy.

I'm sure there are security challenges & so forth, but *showing* that the United States cares about real people is not just words but comes across viscerally in such venues for her. I don't know who to plead with to use her abroad in this kind of format with real people as often as possible.

It wouldn't work with speakers less comfortable and astonishingly well-informed on such a broad range of issues, but SoS Hillary happens to shine in this town hall meeting format. It's a huge smart power asset.

I ofcourse would like to help make contributions to the United States. It's amazing how President George Washington didn't need a fence to protect our borders when he first came into office.

I'm going to be blunt and serious about my thoughts on here, because if it can help save lives, it's a good day for the United States.

1. When buildings are being BUILT in the United States millions of dollars is spent on desgning it, and yet only thousands of dollars is allocated in SAFETY! In my book, I talk about how to escape in an elevator. Who can prove me wrong about the simple fact that ELEVATORS in buildings in the United States "DO NOT COME WITH ESCPAE HATCHES" or the ability to get out, if or when the elevator fails?

2. Walt Disney was one of the smartest men on earth. He managed to take his park, and build it over a menthane system which allows the rides, buildings everything to run off menthane which is saving his own company and not depleting the energy resources needed to run the park. My thinking is, taking his platform and using it for Hospitals and Schools across the country. If you truly want to help cutdown on emissions and cutdown on overheads expenses from schools, colleges, hospitals, Federal Buildings, even Prisons. This would certainly help the economy and reduce green house gas, along with saving the schools, hospitals, prisons budgets on energy expenses in future.

3. The U.S. Goverment towards Car Manufactures -

1. Were in the year 2009 and we still do not have a vehicle that gets 100 miles to one gallon of gas. When we all know that the Vehicle Manufactures are holding back, because the BIG OIL is in bed with the BIG Car Manufactures. Then to include this situation:

1b. The bridge that collasped in MN and all the vehicles went into the water. What method was used to help save lives in that given situation. The experts would say lets start inspecting bridges. Cool but you still do not get the picture that anyone at any given time could come to a bridge and it collaspe or break up while driving over, and there is nothing to protect the people in the vehicles, or better yet any devices on the bridge that gives the people a fair chance to know it's about to collaspe. Meaning three things need to change. Vehicles need to have better safety standards to protect human life when or if a bridge collasped. 2nd you do need to inspect and repair bridges and 3rd you need montioring devices on the bridges to indicate it's condition before people start driving over the bridges in the blind and not know it's current status.

4. You might say i'm also a safety buff. I have written the FAA/NTSB/FBI all those important places that can help to make changes. I'm concerned about safety on buses, trains, vehicles, planes and even boats or ship safety. We just do not go far enough to save human lives. The expectation is to place the burden on first responders but in reality, the true burden should be placed on the Manufactures on the products that make it for people. I have submitted many ideas to bring upon change, I just think that it falls on deaf ears. It's hard for me to understand why people just do not care about making the right changes, and coming up with the best equipment that might save your family or even people around the world. Case in point - my Pod idea for plane safety. Just imagine if everyone who flew in planes or helicopters had their own shell pod that incased everything you need to survive when or it something happens. Remember, there has always been people like myself who comes up with these ideas, but I know firsthand that it takes many people to agree and do the legal side of this idea.

The latest idea submitted to the FAA is being proposed "A SARBURST FLAIR" which if a plane or helicopter crashes this type of flair would send out different colors of smoke. "Green, Red, Blue, Yellow, Orange," along with a noise makers which could help bring rescue closer for anyone who still might be injured from the crash. We all know the time is critical during crashes. The tools of early warning and bringing the right attention to the crashes would help people to get the medical attention or even get help quickier in future. If it takes months to find a crash site from a plane or helicopter that is not good enough. The other side about my pod idea, could be used in EMS to help get people out of danger and evacuated to the nearest hospital.

@ Donald, I walked across the Golden Gate bridge many years ago and got motion sickness because it moves a lot more than one might think in a slight brease.

I think the basic problem is that many pre-formed concrete beamed bridges are not as resistant to vibration over long periods of time. As noted in the accident investigation you cited, the metal brackets connecting the spans suffered metal fatigue and some were not to spec. when installed to begin with.

My Dad was a structural engineer/ commercial architect for over 40 years. Safety was always his job#1 for those building his designs as well as the intended occupants.

He took personal responsibility for quality control on critical assemblies and retired with a spotless safety record.

So please don't paint architects as irresponsible.

By the way, service access panels in elevators have dual use properties. But accesing the shaft is way more dangerous in general than staying put, especially in a fire.

@ Eric in New Mexico -- That was awesome about your Dad and you should be proud of what his accomplishments were in the field of safety. I'm just pointing out that more has to be done to prevent the loss of human life. Whether its in an elevator, a vehicle, or a building that costs millions of dollars, when the safety costs are minor. This is to include bridges because sure I think we all like to know the status of the bridge before we cross over it. We all would like safer vehicles. My intensions are all good. That is also why I come up with ideas which are sent off to make changes that might save a human life one day!

SAFETY TIPS THAT CAN HELP PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD

I have personally taught many people from around the world, my tips work and no doubt have saved lives!

People will always have emergencies or fires, floods things that happen in their lives, the real question is what to do in that situation?

1. Plan for all emergencies
2. Have an exit plan for Fires
3. Use good common sense and above all stay calm and cool under pressure
4. FIRES -

CLASS A Paper, wood products which produces grey or white smoke.

CLASS B Fuel - Gas, Diesel, Flammables produces a black smoke.

CLASS C Electrical - Electrical Devices which have wires or equipment - Produces blue smoke - always shutoff the Electrical breaker switch before attempting to fight the fire. Note: Never put water on an Electrical Fire - Water and Electricity can cause shock hazzards.

FIRE TRIANGLE -

HEAT
FUEL
OXYGEN

Remove one of these elements and NO Fire!

Danger - Smoke can be just as deadly as fire or heat!

Smoke detectors - You can purchase a Smoke Detector that can detect smoke and carbon monixide poison. This is the one I would suggest for people!

You can always use a fire retardant blanket which can also help you evade a fire. "Walk like a Duck" staying low where more oxygen exists and using the back of your hands when evacuating.

Fire Extinguishers - Never buy the cheapest fire extinguisher to protect you and your family. Spend some money and get the 15 Pound A, B, C Chemical Fire Extinguishers to protect your home. Learn how to use it before a fire happens. Always aim the nozzel at the base of the flames - give yourself some distance - Pull the pin and above all make sure you check the gauge on the bottle to ensure it is charged up. Where to put these Fire Extinguishers? You place them in places like the kitchen or in each of your bedrooms where people stay. You can also purchase smoke hoods which can help get out safe!

Medical First Aid Kits - Spend some money and get a good kit you never know what can happen.

Identify your Evacuation routes and ensure your family is prepared to use them in case of a fire. Practise a fire drill in your business or home to be better prepared. Don't wait until a fire happens, because then it could be too late.

Note: Never leave a flame or stove burning without someone watching. Always turn off your heaters, or stoves before going to bed. Anything can happen with an open flame, this is to include candles.

I will include a brief talk about flooding.

The letters I want you to remember is?

H I K

Take a close look at the design of the letters. In shoring these letters can be useful in making support beams. You want to shore up the inside of your home or business. This is the method to use. Basically, you take 4x4 wood or steel beams and make the letters, how simple can it get? The letter H and I are for celings and the letter K is for a door or a hatch. H is more stronger than say I but in an emergency use what you have to shore up your home.

A Shoal? A method used for plugging up a hole. If you have a water leak or main line that breaks, and you have like tons of water coming in your business or home, take a piece of wood cut in a circle just a little bigger than the hole size, then take a hammer and pound the wood in the hole to fill it. This is used when or if you cannot turn the valve off to the water line.

If you have water pumps that can pump the water out, thats a good day!

Remember never panic, use all the resources around you and stay calm, then deal with the situation at hand!

Best Regards,

Donald

I would like to make a comment on missing people especially MISSING AMERICANS? National Secuity should be extended to all Americans that vanish or go missing in the United States or other countries around the world.

If that was your SON or Daughter you would want the FBI, CIA, NSA, FAA, United States Government State Department and along with all United States Senators to support in finding them asap. Not redtape and excuses why you can't lift a finger or put into place a plan to help rescue those that get kidnapped in other countries around the globe.

We have the Central Intelligence Agency which is suppose to be the highest level of Intelligence in the world. My idea which I keep bringing up, the CIA should be apart of finding missing people...

When Miss Natalie Halloway went missing, along with the FBI should of been the CIA but to offer intelligence gathering on what truely happened to her that night she vanished. It would also be a safe bet that they could be more involved in finding Mr. Bob Levinson which served over 20 years for United States.

The United States Government pays the CIA to gather intelligence, well why not include them to help find missing people? This could be a worthy cause.

I was just watching the news Kenn Beck show talk about a missing girl back in 2004 that vanished in the country of Mexico. The father appeared on the show and indicated that they found the vehicle and there appears to be some kind of corruption. The missing girl was in her late 20's. The father claimed a female officer found his daughters vehicle but couldn't give any more details about the case to him. He also said the girl was turned over to some kind of cartel in Mexico. If this sort of thing happens in Mexico something needs to be done. Me personally, As a suggestion, I would close the the Mexican/ United States Border until I got answers as a thought that might help find or get to the truth of what happened!

Best Regards,

Donald

In the vast majority of cases, it is NOT the sons or daughters of U.S. officials who disappear in foreign lands, but if one such disappearance should occur, there is not much that anyone can do sometimes.

It would be leading by example for our government to make as much effort to locate a missing American overseas as it makes for locating missing tax dollars overseas.

Americans travelling in hostile foreign lands are on their own when they get in trouble. Attempts to see them is more difficult than attempts to see Mr. Obama's birth certificate. Tourists held hostage in Iran should not expect the U.S. marines to save them -- they failed in 1979 and probably would fail today.

If Americans want to tour Iran, best do it on the Internet. If one wants to talk to Iranian officials, send them an e-mail. If Iran's government can't locate a single American who disappeared in their custody, that should be sufficient warning not to go there.

The fact is, Iranian government officials are enthralled in such anti-Americanism that it is not safe for anyone but a Shia to even go near Iran.

MORE SAFETY TIPS THAT CAN HELP YOU, YOUR FAMILY AND BUSINESS

1. When you purchase a generator to provide emergency power, always remember it needs to be physically located outside, not inside your home or business. The fumes from the generator produce carbon monixide poison.

2. Most people may not realize you need 20 Percent of Oxygen to breath. If its too low or too rich it can be deadly.

3. Painters should also take caution on when using paint, ensure they have the rooms well ventilated because even paint can produce fumes.

4. Natural Gas -- How can you tell when the homeowner uses this type of fuel? Just watch the news when a home implodes from a gas line, it just takes one leak, a spark and woooooooooooooooooooooof! The bottles from the gas can be still standing outside, but the home is destroyed. Think twice about having Natural Gas. How you can tell if have a gas leak? 1. Smelling the Gas odor. 2. Taking liquid soap and placing it over the pipe if it bubbles then you found the leak. 3. Never light or spark anything if you smell Gas. The key about Natural Gas or propane is simple, the gas itself will linger on its path, it can hide and stay in an area until it finally gets ventilated or if someone lights something, once again Wooooooooooooooooof!

Wood Stoves -- Remember too many chimney fires happen. Always ensure you have cleaned the chimney before using. Also maintain a good distance between the wood (fuel) and the wood stove. Never fall asleep with a fire burning.

Kerosene Stoves -- Fumes plus not paying attention to this stove. Never have anything that will combust around the stove. Ensure you have followed the safety guidelines for the device you purchase.

5. What is Spontaneous Combustion? Example: You place an oily rag in your closet. It's during summer time and the temperatures in the closet rise and cause a flashpoint for the oil on the rag. The chemical and material being fuel will ignite. Once that happens, a fire starts. Be cautious about what material you leave in areas. Check the flashpoints on all chemicals you use.

6. What is black in color, used during BBQ's and could save your life? Charcoal

Note: If you ever poisoned, call 911 first. If time is critical check with your Doctors and EMS. However, they have said liquid Charcoal can save you life in an emergency.

Have a good day and remember the tips it just might save a life one day!

SMART POWER SHOULD INCLUDE SMART BUILDING AND SAFETY

1. We Americans will always fall into the same traps over and over again. We will always build the same type of homes and business buildings. When we ever LEARN to build Smarter, Safer and energy Efficient Design HOMES?

2. The State of California is a wonderful example: They know about the Santa Anna winds but since they are in denial of putting up any kind of defense to prevent the wind from spreading, they too will always experience these types of problems. One Fire Truck trying to put out a Massive Fire is irresponsible. My suggestions to the State of California is very simple:

1. You place many of those big water towers around the state. 2nd you have a watering system that allows for a 360 Degree angle vectoring system. Gravity feed system. You run water lines and pumps at pump stations. You can even use solar power for the pumps. Which disperses the water equally in a full circle. This would shower the flames and give them a fighting chance in future. The United States Government should convert some of the old Bombers to carry fire retardant material in support of the bigger fires. Instead what will they do, spend upwards of billions of dollars trying to put out fires, fire equipment and yet continue spending because they too havn't learned the basic principal of the situation they have at hand. The laws of nature will always win in the end.

2. State of Louisiana -- Very simple they were so pleased to survive the last storm. Once again resting on their lorals. The Governor mentioned how the new locks stayed up. Guess what? They too havn't learned what the people of Holland learned. They were able to bring in rock, dirt and proved their system works smarter. This is how life works, you survive one storm and you think you have it? Wrong again... You have to start thinking about the what if's otherwise Lousiana will have another Hurricane Katrina and when it does more Billions of dollars will be spent, more lives will be lost because we continue doing the same things over and over again! I hope by now there is an evacuation plan for the entire state of Louisiana. God forbid they go through something like that without having a good plan to evacuate the people.

It's just like the Minors Trapped. First all the experts want to try it their way to save lives. Guess what it didn't work. Why didn't it work? Because we should be mining different. We should be removing all the surface rock and not sending our people down into a MINE which can collaspe at any moment of time. I agree it would cost more, but whats the true cost when you lose human life?

New homes being built today should have fire extinguishers in each of the rooms. Should have smoke detectors...should have emergency routes designed along with a sprinkling system eternal and internal. Should come with emergency kits and medical boxes. It should be law that new homes come with these types of devices to help people. Once again people buy homes that cost upwards in the millions of dollars and spent 20 bucks for emergency supplies and wonder why they can't survive a disaster?

Donald
