Photo of the Week: “Serving Abroad…Through Their Eyes” Deadline Approaching

The Office of Art in Embassies' "Serving Abroad…Through Their Eyes" photo submissions have been pouring in and, like this photo from State employee Derek Brown of children in Kenya, they are -- wow -- dramatic, compelling and totally inspiring! This creative project featuring images from the day-to-day life of those serving overseas will be expressed in at least two distinct iterations. Lincoln Schatz, a contemporary American artist best known for works that utilize video to collect and display images from specific environments, will be creating a video-art piece incorporating selected images that will ultimately be installed in the U.S. Embassy in Kabul after it tours other national and international venues. Our "Photo of the Week" comes to us from USAID photographer Morgana Wingard and depicts women collecting clean drinking water. Abebow Gesesse, the owner of a poultry farm in Mojo, Ethiopia, received a loan from Dashen Bank thanks to a USAID guarantee through their Development Credit Authority program. The loan allowed him to buy his own truck, construct an additional barn, and build a well and water pump for his farm. Abebow invited the 200 households in his town to access the water at no cost. One of the women said, "Before we had access to this water pump we would have to walk 6 kilometers to be able to purchase clean water. Abebow lets the community access his… more »

This week's "Photo of the Week" comes to us from the First Plenary of the 2012 Session of the Conference on Disarmament (CD) in Geneva, Switzerland, on January 24, 2012. Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control, Verification and Compliance Rose E. Gottemoeller delivered the opening statement for the United States on the progress on arms control and disarmament that has been made over the course of the past year.

This week's "Photo of the Week" was taken by U.S. Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs' employee Beth Payne for the "Serving Abroad…Through Their Eyes" exhibition. The photograph shows a group of children playing soccer in the shadow of the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata, India. The U.S. Department of State has a strong commitment to engaging young people worldwide and to using people-to-people diplomacy as a means to create opportunities for greater understanding, including using sports as a means of empowerment.

This week's “Photo of the Week” was submitted by U.S. Air Force Captain Alden Y. Gilroy to the Office of Art in Embassies for the “Serving Abroad…Through Their Eyes” exhibition. Pictured is First Lieutenant Matthew Suber, who was serving as the Force Protection Officer during Exercise AFRICA ENDEAVOR, the largest communications exercise on the African continent. The Gambian Army hosted the event at Fajara Barracks, which is also home to many families of their soldiers.

Our "Photo of the Week" comes to us from James Rivera, who serves at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, Egypt. James submitted this photograph to the Office of Art in Embassies for the "Through Their Eyes...Service Abroad" exhibition. His image captures the Nile River, with two boats silhouetted in the orange and yellow glow of a beautiful sunset.

James' image reminds us of the beauty and importance of our planet's natural resources, particularly our water resources. Each week, we will be highlighting a U.S. government photograph from around the world as part of our "Photo of the Week" segment. This week's photograph comes to us from the Office of Art in Embassies. Taken by retired U.S. Army Lieutentant Colonel Richard A. Fisher, the photograph captures the descent of the U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland and U.S. Embassy Bern staff members from the Matterhorn in southern Switzerland. Lt. Colonel Fisher submitted the photograph for consideration in the "Serving Abroad...Through Their Eyes" exhibition.
