Balancing Humanitarian Issues With International Security
Posted by Tara Foley on Nov 17, 2007 - 03:41 PM

My first assignment in Riyadh was a lesson in the overlapping but sometimes competing demands of humanitarian and security concerns in U.S. foreign policy. American foreign policy, to me, is anchored by two distinct objectives: fulfilling our responsibility to the American people to safeguard U.S. national security and interests, and fulfilling our responsibility as a member of the international community to achieve greater security and a better quality of life for us all. Overwhelmingly, I believe that these two goals are complementary, even essential, to one another. In a world of limited resources, however, we are not always able to pursue all of our goals simultaneously and with equal vigor.

In my first weeks at post, I went from ministry to ministry, trying to learn what I could about Saudi Arabia’s policies on…

What It’s Like To Be Secretary Rice’s Chef on Overseas Missions
Posted by Masharika Prejean on Nov 16, 2007 - 12:00 PM

Khristine Farmer, 1st Flight Attendant and Chef for Secretary Rice. [State Dept. photo]

The old adage says “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” If that’s the case, then what do guacamole, fruit smoothies, black bean soup, lamb chops, and other delicacies ward off? Secretary Rice and her traveling party have a grueling schedule when on the road (and in the air). Transatlantic flights and long days in countries around the globe add up; taxing the body and its immune system. Lucky for those of us on the plane, we’ve found the keeper of health and defender against hunger in Khristine Farmer, our 1st Flight Attendant and chef on many of our grueling overseas missions. Khristine is one of several Flight Attendants that look out for our safety and maintain a level of professionalism and service that lives up to their status as distinguished members of the 89th Airlift Wing, based out of Andrews Air Force…

President Musharraf has said that he will conduct elections in Pakistan, step down as head of the military, and restore the constitution by January 15.

What actions should the U.S. government take if President Musharraf does not complete what he has called a "total, complete, democratic dispensation" by the indicated date?

On Becoming a Diplomat

New Foreign Service Officers pose for a picture at the State Dept. Nov. 7, 2007. [State Dept. photo]

Ajani Husbands just recently became a Foreign Service Officer and plans to share his experiences as a new FSO here on Dipnote.

I, Ajani Husbands, do solemnly swear to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America. On November 2, 2007, I completed my A-100 class, the class that serves as an introduction to diplomacy and is required for all incoming Foreign Service Officers, the United States’ front lines of diplomacy in international affairs. During the seven weeks of training, I asked myself, ”What does it mean to take the oath?” Does it mean that I am bound to protect and defend U.S. foreign policy, even if I stalwartly disagree with it? Does it mean that my priorities lie with protecting and defending the interests of the particular Presidential Administration…
