Travel Diary: Secretary Clinton in Thailand

On November 16-17, 2011, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton traveled to Bangkok to underscore our strong alliance with Thailand and U.S. support for Thailand's recovery efforts following severe flooding. She met with senior officials to discuss shared interests and regional issues in advance of the East Asia Summit. In remarks with Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, Secretary Clinton said:

"...It is a pleasure to be here to renew the ties that have bound the United States and Thailand together for so many years. Our nations are connected through not only security cooperation and business ties, but the democratic values we share and the bonds of family and friendship that link our people. During this past century, we have stood by each other in times of challenge, and we are proud to stand with you now in this time of challenge as you contend with the worst floods of your nation's history."

During her travel to Thailand, Secretary Clinton visited one of the largest flood evacuation facilities and spoke with flood victims. On November 16, the United States announced more than $10 million in additional assistance and civic aid to support Thailand in responding to the severe flooding. The Thai Government, military, and people have undertaken tremendous efforts to address the flooding, and the United States is committed to supporting our ally's speedy and full recovery.
