A Disaster in Haiti and How You Can Help

Posted by Cheryl D. Mills / January 12, 2010

More about the crisis and how to help: state.gov/haitiquake

About the Author: Cheryl Mills serves as the Counselor and Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Earlier today, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 struck Haiti. Reports are still coming in, but it appears that many schools, hospitals and other buildings have collapsed, adding more suffering to an already impoverished nation, the poorest country in the western hemisphere.

Reports continue to pour in from all over and we are extending all our thoughts and prayers to those who have been affected.

As Secretary Clinton said earlier, the U.S. government will offer assistance to Haiti and others in the region in the form of civilian and military disaster relief and humanitarian assistance.

For those interested in helping immediately, simply text "HAITI" to "90999" and a donation of $10 will be given automatically to the Red Cross to help with relief efforts, charged to your cell phone bill.

Or you can go online to organizations like the Red Cross and Mercy Corps to make a contribution to the disaster relief efforts.

The State Department Operations Center has set up the following number for Americans seeking information about family members in Haiti: 1-888-407-4747. You may email inquiries to: Haiti-Earthquake@state.gov. We'll provide more details and opportunities to help as we learn more. To stay up-to-date, follow us on state.gov.

Update: Anyone wishing to donate or provide assistance in Haiti following the devastating earthquake that struck near Port au Prince on Jan 12, 2010, is asked to contact the Center for International Disaster Information.

You also can send your message to helphaiti@state.gov. Be certain to include in the subject line "Donation of" followed by the products you are willing to donate. A staffer will share the information with relief and development agencies that have the ability to transport collected items to the affected region and have identified needed goods.

I would love to help house any of the children that need a home. I love all ages. I cant have kids due to endometriosis and I love to help out those less fortunate so I have been doing foster care for 10+ years. I would love to open my home for short or long term. I am in Nebraska and could care for a sibbling strip of up to 3. Please pass my name and contact information along as well. I am willing to travel to pick the children up or pay to have them transported to NE.
I understand the importance of the emotional and mental challenges that these kids will more than likely face such as ptsd, and other mental illnesses, I have worked with kids and adults with emotional and behavioral differences for about 20 years now.

I would also be willing to volunteer in Haiti if someone can give me some information ASAP that would be great.

I am a Single Parent with Heart to help in Haiti Relief Efforts, Can Receive Children into my home, My five Children are all grown and married out of my home. I recently retired from employment with the State of California and I am 58 years of age. My have a lot of years to give towards helping with the massive need that the children that are now unable to take care of themselves, because of the loss of their parents and I am ready to start whatever proceeding necessary to be able to receive children. I am available for deployment to Haiti to help with the American Red Cross Headquarters, with data entry of Staff and computer needs if necessary.
With the massive need of help for the many precious children who are earthquake victims that are now orphaned, and with my heart to help, I believe I can be of blessing to the children and them to me. I am ready to serve and allow the children to once again have a life of joy, no matter how long it will take for them to achieve that level of happiness in their lives again. I am also ready to serve in Haiti with the American Red Cross if needed, and IF, I am unable to bring any of the children here to my home. I heard the eleven year old girl, screaming in pain, today, where Dr. Sanjay Gupta visited the hospital where she is being treated and my heart hurt badly for her and all those children that are enduring the same type of anguish and pain and I can no longer sit on the sideline and do nothing, when I have so much love, patience and compassion to give to the children. I would like to be of help and again, I am ready to go through any processes it will take for me to do so.

Once there the children, one injured with 2 broken legs, were turned away and not allowed to enter the airport. With that we went to the Haitian Consulate inOrlando, no help. The worst was the visit to Immigration in Orlando. Now in the mist of disaester you give instruction to HELPLESS CHILDREN, and then they are left. We are bringing in ORPHANes...these children have parents here...it is sickining...to watch them, my friends, coworkers have faith in our Goverment ...only for us to fail them....

My husband and I would love to help an orphaned child. We have 3 children, 2 boys 9 and 7, and a 31/2 year old daughter. We have experience with special needs children and would even be willing to help a child that was here temporarily. We are so sorry for the Haitian people to have to endure this tragedy. Please let us help a needy child by providing a safe and stable home to grow up in. PLEASE BRING THESE CHILDREN TO SAFETY! Expedite their paperwork. Thank you, Joy P.

My brother and his wife are currently in the process of trying to bring home their 5 children from Haiti.

I know that many Members of Congress continue to support efforts on behalf of Haiti’s orphaned children. I extend my thanks to the Senator Bob Bennett and Senator Orrin Hatch.

I am writing because........

* We need your help to get our adoptive child out of Haiti safely.
* Water, food and medicine are running out.
* Gangs have looted some of the orphanages and even travel is not safe for the children.
* The Department of Homeland security has granted humanitarian parole, but it is only the first step.
* The devastation from the earthquake is vast and our child’s safety - and even life - is at risk.

Joint Council on International Children’s Services, the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, and a team of congressional offices and relief organizations are working to coordinate a staging and housing center to provide:

* Physical safety
* Medicine
* Food
* Water
* A Staging Center for USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services) to process humanitarian parole

The groups working to launch the staging and housing center already have most of what the children need.
But they do not have

* Water
* Security to protect the children and supplies from gangs
* Transportation to bring the children into this safe haven

We are asking that Sentors Bob Bennett and Orrin Hatch personally call:

* Secretary of State Clinton, and
* Dr. Shah, Administrator Designate at USAID

And specifically request that they authorize security forces be sent to the offered staging center and assist in the extraction and transport of these children from their orphanages to the staging center. All other pieces of a successful operation of this staging center are currently in place, but all hinge on this authorization of security and transport.

If this security does not reach the site within 24 hours, children being adopted and many other children will continue to suffer and may in fact not live long enough to be united with (my family) and the other 300 U.S. families.

Hello,
I am an unemployed college graduate with tons of time and nothing to do. I would really like to go to Haiti and help with anything I can; the children, organizing relief stations, whatever. I cannot seem to find any info anywhere on how I can do this. Can someone email me with info or tell me where I can get info? I would really appreciate it. I would like to do something meaningful with my time and if I'm not going to get a job in the US I'd rather be volunteering and helping these people in need. Thanks.

Help! We need to get these ophraned children brought to the US for immediate placmement in foster homes or adoption! There has to be some type of provision for horrific disasters such as this. US Govt...please act swiftly to bring some of these children to the states and disperse supplies in Haita. Willing to open my home to a child either temporary or permanetly. We are Christians, and have a small child now. Would love to share our love.... How can we get more information? As all the others ask, is there a list? What is being done. All we here on the news is that supplies dispersements are delayed.
I pray God be with these people....
