U.S., Northern Ireland: Working for a Better Future

Northern Ireland First and Deputy Ministers with Secretary Clinton, Washington, Mar. 17, 2009. [AP]

Yesterday, Secretary Clinton met with Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness. Following their meeting, Secretary Clinton said:

"Northern Ireland has made such remarkable progress since the signing of the Good Friday Accord. We’ve had more than a decade of peace and progress and prosperity for many. Recent acts of violence cannot be allowed to undermine that progress and the progress that is yet to come as these two leaders and those who work with them continue to move into the future. The violence that has occurred with the killing of the two young soldiers and the police officer are an affront to the values of every community, every person who believes in the power of peace and reconciliation.

The two men standing on either side of me led Northern Ireland through the last days in a commendable manner. Along with the governments of Ireland and the United Kingdom, they have confronted these acts of violence with boldness and statesmanship. And they have responded to actions intended to sow fear and division with unity and courage.

So we are here after ten years of peace, and we’re committed to looking forward to a future where we, the United States, working with them, can create a better life so that every child growing up in Northern Ireland has a chance to live up to his or her God-given potential."

There is a public bath in Belfast, but women are not allowed to use it. Perhaps the proprietors could set apart a day of the week for women so everyone could take a bath like the Irish men.

"It is not a subject of passing interest, but of surpassing interest," to use SecState Hillary's excellent phrasing, *how* we can promote forward the hardwon lessons of the Irish troubles being moved out of the aggrieved past towards a future into other currently grim areas of the weeping Earth whose children if they could speak loudly enough to be heard would say, "How can you our parents feud and wound over your ancient stains and pains while we bleed? We beseech you to turn from the past of error and arrogance to our untarnished future."

Every hour we waste in violence or grievance steals directly from our children whom we claim to so treasure. It is not our words which reveal our treasuring but our actions. We must be mindful, heartful, kindful, and gutwise. It is a transforming time upon our darling Earth, and our duty is to beautiful action, all day every day.

Dear Hillary,

You made this a very special St. Patrick's Day. I am sure St. Patrick was smiling down on you and all the dignitaries you met with yesterday.

Thank you for all of your hard work. I would be remiss not to mention that, as always, you looked spectacular!
