Female Genital Mutilation/ Cutting
Thank you indeed Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for your inspirational and timely attitude towards female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C).
Indeed it’s a great tragedy that still the procedure is going on in some parts of the world . As a public health practitioner I sincerely condemned and believe that FMG/C must be stopped for the betterment of the society.

@ Anonymous in Ohio, I agree with you that the nature of this panel does appear ethnocentric, but I find the statement "we should not assume people are educated as we are elsewhere-these new lessons may be a shock to them" equally obtuse. The grey area concerning genital cutting is less a question of education, of having learned specific "lessons," than it is a matter of cultural understanding and socialization. There are intense social pressures at play that inform our conceptions of gender and sexuality in our own society, as there are transnationally.

PLEASE stop calling it FGC. It is NOT cutting. If I take a knife and cut my finger, it will scab over and will heal back to normal. If I take a knife and cut my finger off, it will be forever altered in form and function with a permanent mutilated appearance. I don't care what the Webster dictionary says, mutilation has nothing to do with intent. It is what it is. If I "accidentally" get burned, I will be mutilated. If I get "accidentally" disfigured in a car accident, I will be permanently mutilated. Mutilation is or is not--whether intentional or not.

I am a proud citizen and i respect the people's sense of moral responsibility on this matter. but i fear it is way to ethnocentric for direct backing from the government. considering the shift in international policy, why wasn't a secondary institution (i.e. non-profit) endorsed financially by the government? to allow the people to act in moral justice as they desire without an unnecessarily large intrusion felt by others in the world. We should not assume people are educated as we are elsewhere - these new lessons may be a shock to them - and it might be seen by some as a reason to hate the US's "international police" policy (ironically, probably not the ones they are helping)
