Happy birthday and thank you for all your good work.
While the obstructionist efforts of some countries, the U.S. included, are sometimes effective, the UN's accomplishments far outnumber its efforts that are sometimes less than successful.
Onward to the end of nationalism.

The United Nations does fulfill its mission in many ways. Offering initiatives for education, health, and peace are the most important things. The work with children is what will do more than anything to ensure that the world survives this century in peace. I would like to see them take a stand on humane treatment of animals. I think that the following quote applies to every nation in the world. Some do better than others. China, right now is an egregious offender. I hope the UN will bring pressure to bear upon them if they want to be a civilized and important country.
"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." ~ Gandhi

The U.S. is alternately its great benefactor and great nemesis. It is not our UN - it is OUR UN!

The UN is doing its very best. The U.S. needs be more compliant and more friendly to the UN's needs. The UN is being the world's and the U.S.' partner without it clipping its wings. The UN would be more effective if the U.S. would stop blockading decisions in the UN but sponsor them (e.g. The Kyoto Project). The UN cannot be 90% effective if the U.S. isn't on board fully.

The United Nations has always done the best work it can do with the resources it has been given. These resources are always donated from member countries and organizations. As "Ralph in Greece" said, the UN has had its share of problems, including its lethargic response to many of the world's humanitarian crises such as Darfur and Rwanda, but with more support and awareness, the U.S. and other member nations may make the United Nations more effective in its actions.
In practical terms, the UN is the world's foremost Inter-Governmental Organization. The UN and its sub-organizations have brokered peace deals, averted economic crises, and in general, promoted human welfare. Although the United Nations has no direct power, its soft power has been, and still will be, effective for the promotion of world welfare. Without the United Nations, the international system would truly be an anarchy of nations.

UN Wins Nobel Peace Prize, Again
The UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Al Gore together won the Nobel Peace Prize for their work to educate the world on catastrophic climate change. This is the third time in the past seven years that a UN entity has been recognized with the Nobel Peace Prize.
Highest Number of Afghan Children Enrolled in School in Country's History
Aided by the UN's work in Afghanistan, more children are attending school than ever before in the country's history, most especially girls. This is turning the tide for the educational future of an entire generation of young Afghans.
Largest Number of Peacekeepers Ever Deployed
In the past year, more than 110 countries sent troops to serve in 18 UN peacekeeping missions in places like Liberia, Sudan, Lebanon, and Haiti, contributing to the largest deployment of UN peacekeepers in history.
Millions of Children Protected Against Preventable Disease
The Measles Initiative, which includes the World Health Organization, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), and the UN Foundation, has helped vaccinate over 372 million children -- reducing measles deaths in Africa by 75% (compared to 1999). By partnering with campaigns like Nothing But Nets, they also distribute life saving mosquito nets that protect children from malaria.
New Technology Enables Disaster Relief to Arrive Faster in Humanitarian Crises
In partnership with the UN's disaster relief organization (OCHA), the UN's Children Fund (UNICEF) and other UN agencies, the NGO Telecoms Sans Frontieres (TSF), also known as Telecoms Without Borders, deployed seven times this year to support emergency relief efforts in places like Darfur's refugee camps, and coastal areas of Peru devastated by the 8.1 magnitude earthquake this summer.
YES, the UN fulfills its mission effectively. We should pay our past due dues and support the UN. This is a national embarassment.

Yes, the United Nations continues to fulfill its mission. If we do not participate in the United Nations, then we cannot tell it what to do. Also, the United Nations is made up of nations of the world. The world has many other people besides the people of the United States. Just because some of the people in the government of the United States do not want to make sacrifices in order to switch to renewable energy, just because some of the people in the government of the United States do not want to switch off of the oil bandwagon because that bandwagon makes them rich, does not mean that we are not responsible for our pollution that we create. We need to switch off the oil bandwagon and get on the green bandwagon with renewable energy.
President Bush does not want to because oil makes him and his cohorts rich and he does not really believe in God. Bush wants to destroy the world and immerse us in the netherworlds. He is a part of Satan. Pres. Bush does not want to follow God and be a part of the green revolution.

Time and again effective responses to dictators, genocide, disasters, drought and earthquake relief, famine, slavery, and wars have been stymied by America's economic blackmail, spying, and character assassinations, all of which comprise the bag of diplomatic tools used by the U.S. to manipulate the international community for its own short-sighted economic and jingoistic ends. Fascism and corruption at their most destructive propels the machinations of American politicians regarding the UN and the American people.

I am retired staff of the World Health Organization. Your question about the UN effectively fulfilling its mission is a complicated question.
First, do you mean the UN Secretariat? .. the specialized agencies of the UN, like UNICEF, UNFPA and WHO? .. the regional UN commissions, like ESCAP?
Second, how do you define "effective"?
Third, to which of its many "missions" do you refer?
On the whole, I think the UN is fulfilling effectively its mission. There are strong areas and weaker areas. There is no other world-wide organization for discussion and managed agreements. Discussion amongst many peoples with differing viewpoints, cultures and perspectives is by its very nature clumsy, lengthy and time-consuming. In my opinion, it is a natural and a mandatory prerequisite for all members of our Earth-family.

As a tool for the successful governance of the planet (now that atavic rifts of race, beliefs, regions, are beginning to be challenged because of new awareness & pressing need), it has an essential place.
In the face of terrifying ecological developments, it is potentially a most beneficient instrument to ensure the healthy evolution of world technology and socioeconomic factors.
The United Nations must evolve according to the changing demands of the planet, increasingly respected in its irreplaceable role and, like any living entity, cared for and nourished.

My only criticism is that it failed to stop the Bush administration from engaging in an illegal, unprovoked, immoral act of aggression against Iraq. This is partly due to the fact that the US wields too much power at the UN, and has a veto on the security council, which prevents the U.S. from ever being held accountable or stopped from engaging in illegal wars.

The UN is of course, effective - as effective as it could be with full funding and support from countries like the US? Well, of course not. It is a chicken and egg scenario: US chokes and questions it, the fast changing world forces it to enlarge its own mandate, and everyone expects it to cure all that ails us, so clearly it will not reach expectations, whatever they may be in a given year. So, really, there is no real answer to this question. Its systems need to be strengthened and streamlined. It needs reform especially at headquarter level. Its entire incentive structure needs an overhaul. But how can it do this when countries constantly use the UN to help it reach their own goals and when those counties that need the UN mismanage resources and don't deliver on their sovereign promises. Does the UN do what it sets out to do - even without unconditional support from countries around the world - it does all that it can in pursuit of these goals.

The world very much needs what the UN offers, provides, and stands for. However, it is my strong belief that the voting structure needs to be overhauled. At present, only a few powerful nations hold veto power over the opinions and desires of the rest of the world's peoples. That is probably the greatest obstacle to effectiveness that the UN faces today.

Absolutely the UN effectively fulfills its mission. It would fulfill it even better if we (the U.S.) regularly paid its dues in full. For all the rhetoric about World Wars III or IV or V, the UN is the reason why we haven't really had them, and I want to keep it that way.

The UN is the most effective format for bringing together nations to choose the course of human existence. I firmly believe that if the United States supported the UN, financially, politically and ideologically, there would be zero doubt about the UN's effectiveness. It is time that the U.S. fulfills our dues to UN and our debt to UN Peacekeeping. This year's record number of Peacekeeping missions (18) is indication enough that the world deserves our support. Furthermore, how many Nobel Peace prizes will be awarded to UN entities before Americans realize the value of peace?

The UN recently won the Nobel Prize for Peace for it's work on climate change. They have saved children's lives all over the world, and are involved in peacekeeping.
I think it's important that the U.S. starts paying its share of expenses for running the UN.

Yes, to the extent the member nations allow, and fund the UN; it does fulfill it's mission. The problems caused by nations unilateral actions, have never been more clear; nor, has the need for the a world wide body to mediate the foibles of individual nations and leaders.

Try to reach the targeted group. In undeveloped countries, there is no human rights at all. Do not see the problems with political eyes. UN activities should be free from political pressure, but now it is totally biased with political pressure.
