U.S. Supports Carpet Sector in Pakistan

A U.S. delegation inaugurated a handmade carpet exhibition hosted by the USAID/Pakistan Jobs project and Carpet Training Institute October 5 in Lahore. The exhibition was followed by a certificate distribution ceremony to 24 successful master trainees who completed three-month training in carpet weaving using the Turkish knot.
"The U.S. is happy to honor the culture and tradition of Pakistan by supporting the carpet industry," U.S. Consul General Carmela Conroy said at the exhibition. "Together we can forge a better future for all Pakistanis."
The USAID-funded project taught 24 master trainees Turkish knot-weaving skills and these trainees are now training unemployed men and women from Southern Punjab. Once the training is completed, trainees will… more »
U.S. Delivers Flood Relief Supplies to Gilgit, Pakistan

Delivering much-needed aid to Pakistani citizens affected by floods in the remote northern region, a U.S. Marine Corps KC-130 cargo aircraft flew 11,000 pounds of relief supplies into Gilgit, Pakistan on Saturday, August 28.
As with all U.S. military relief operations, the flight was conducted in partnership with the Pakistan military. Additional aid flights to Gilgit are planned in the very near future.
Gilgit is the capital city of Pakistan's self-governed Gilgit-Baltistan region, located in the north of Pakistan. Known for its rugged and mountainous terrain, significant flood damage to the region's roads and bridges has made aid delivery difficult.

During an interview on Pakistan Radio on August 25, USAID Administrator Dr. Rajiv Shah invited people to share the latest information and updates on Pakistan flood recovery efforts by SMS texting the word "FLOODS" to 7111.
“We are pleased that Pakistan has a forum for information sharing that people everywhere can use to engage each other in the flood relief effort,” said Dr. Shah. “Information sharing can help connect people to resources to aid in disaster recovery and to engage one another in problem-solving.”

Americans Texting To Support Pakistan Flood Relief

Moved by news of the devastating floods in Pakistan, Americans have begun raising money for emergency relief in Pakistan using the latest communications technologies. By texting the word SWAT to telephone number 50555, cellular phone users will be able to donate $10 to help flood victims in Pakistan through the U.N. High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).
An estimated 3 million people have been affected by the flooding. UNHCR emergency response teams are distributing tents, relief supplies, and humanitarian assistance to an estimated 200,000 people displaced by the recent flooding.

The U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan, Anne W. Patterson, announced today that the U.S. government is continuing to send assistance for flood relief efforts in the country. "The United States supports Pakistan's emergency relief efforts on behalf of people affected by recent monsoon floods," said Ambassador Patterson.
In response to Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority's specific request for the following assistance, the United States is providing:
Four Zodiac inflatable rescue boats, which are designed and built for lightness and speed on rapidly flowing waters;

In a ceremony held on July 26, U.S. Cultural Affairs Officer in Karachi Sue Harville congratulated 129 Pakistani graduates for completing a three month textile management training course. The training sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) aims to improve middle management in the textile industry training and Pakistan's workforce development systems.

U.S.-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue: Defense Working Group Meeting

A meeting of the Pakistan-U.S. "Exchange on Defense Planning Group" was held in Rawalpindi July 21-23 as part of the Pakistan-U.S. Strategic Dialogue working group on Defense. The last meeting of the group was held in June 2010.
The two sides were led by Pakistan's Secretary of Defense, Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Syed Athar Ali, and U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Force Development Mr. David Ochmanek, along with their officials.
The meeting reviewed progress made since the last EDP meeting. They also discussed the multi-year defense cooperation between the two countries, and mechanisms for prioritizing and integrating security and defense capability requirements. The final working group meeting of the U.S.-Pakistan strategic dialogue took place July 8, when Pakistani and U.S. officials met to discuss ways to increase law enforcement cooperation and combat terrorism.
This is the first time this group has met since Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi launched the U.S.-Pakistan strategic dialogue in Washington, D.C., in March of this year.
